1784 John Carter

The topographical artist, John Carter was commissioned by Gough to prepare sketches for a volume of engravings of English
church monuments.  In 1784 he visited Glastonbury and, not finding monuments in the Abbey, he produced sketches of antiquities
in the town and indicated on sketch plans where he was standing when he drew them.

None of the sketches were required by Gough and Carter obtained his permission to use 16 of them (with many others from other towns) in his own publication.  He engraved and published six volumes of ’Views of Ancient Buildings in England Drawn in different Towns and Engraved by John Carter commencing 1764’.  They were published: volume 1, 1786; volume 2, 1786; volume 3, 1787; volume 4, 1789; volume 5, 1791; and volume 6, 1793 and were pocket size, each page being 8.5cms wide and 11.25cms high (3¼x4½ inches).  The Glastonbury Plates are in Volume 4.

The Society’s copies were bound together in one volume by Price, Bookbinder of Wells and it was signed by the Society's founder, J G L Bulleid.
